韩魏公在相为“昼锦堂”,欧公记之“仕宦至将相,富贵归故乡”,韩公得之爱赏.后数日,欧复遣介,别以本至,曰：“前有未是,可换此本.”韩再三玩之,无异前者,但于“仕宦”、“富贵”后各添一“而”字,文义尤畅.前辈为文不易如此.
韩魏公做宰相的时候,曾经修了一座昼锦堂,欧阳修曾经作文记述它道：“做官直做到将相,富贵之后衣锦还乡.”韩魏公得到这篇文章之后很是喜爱、欣赏.后来又过了几天,欧阳修又派人来,另送了一篇文章给韩魏公,说：“前面的那篇文章有不妥当的地方,您可以换这篇看.”韩魏公再三玩味新送来的这篇文章,与前一篇并没有很大的区别,但是在“仕宦”、“富贵”两个词下面各添加了一个“而”字,这样就使文章的意义更加的流畅.前辈高人作文章,其中的艰辛谨慎在这件事中可见一斑啊.
