这东西的目的就是在某种意义上,揭示构成这门学科的最基本问题和概念.
as it were 这个词,有点像限定词.一般人说话,为了保证客观性,不显得臆断,就会加一个限定词.比如,我们中国人说：“他可以说是个混球.”这就表明说话者的态度：他是个混球.但是为了显得不那么personal或者武断,说话者就要加一个：可以说是,来表达客观性.
外国人也是这样的.他们加的那个词就是as it were .这个词相当于：so to speak,you might say,you can say,就是：可以这么说,可以这么认为.
甚至,套用流行一点的说法就是：if you know what I mean.你懂的.（我说出来的意思和我心里想的不是全然相同,但是你懂的.这个意思.）
举个例子：
"...and this little cartoon,as it were,I think we can use to demonstrate..."
这句就是说,说话者认为这部动画片可以认为是动画片,但是不完全是动画片,它还有更深的内蕴.
as it were一般用在需要限定的场合.常常是说话者想要含蓄的表达一些意思,或者修正自己前面说的过于武断或者含义不清的话.
再给个例子：He is a cruel teacher,as it were as he forces us to do so much homework.
就是说,他可以说是一个严酷的老师.（但是,说话者其实是在称赞他,或者说是在暗指：后来我们懂了,他对我们的帮助.）
