不可以简单机械地用where=in which.定语从句中关系代词前的介词的选择要遵循“瞻前顾后”原则.所谓“瞻前”就是考虑介词与定语从句前面的先行词的关系,“顾后”就是要考虑后面定语从句中谓语的关系.该介词的选择有时候受前面先行词的影响,又有时候受后面从句中谓语的影响.现略举数例来说明.
1.This is the house in which he was born.这就是他出生的那个房子.
2.This is the farm on which he once worked.这就是他曾经工作过的农场.
3.Who is the man with whom you just talked?你刚才和她谈话的那个人是谁?
4.This is the question about which we argued a lot.这就是我们激烈争论的那个问题.
句1中的介词用in是因为先行词是house,必须用介词in,形成in the house；which代指the house,in which此处就等于in the house.
句2中的介词用on是因为先行词是farm,必须用介词on,形成on thefarm；which代指the farm,on which此处就等于on the farm.
句3中的介词用with是因为后面定语从句的谓语动词talk不及物,需要加介词,talk with sb.；whom指代the man,talk with whom 就是talk with the man.
句4中的介词用about是因为后面定语从句的谓语动词argue不及物,需要加介词,argue about sth.；which指代the question,argue about which就是argue about the question.
定语从句中的状语可以由介词+which的形式替代：
where= on which/ at which / in which /.... on the farm, at the station, in the house...
when=on which/at which/ in which/during which/.... on the day / at nig...
