The Guangming Daily’s article on Chinese children’s creativity,“what has been stopping the wings of imagination?” has received lots of attention lately.It points out that a survey of 21 countries conducted by International Assessment of Educational Progress (IAEP) found that Chinese children were top of the class for computer skills compared with children from 20 other countries,but their creativity was fifth from the bottom.
Many people responded very furiously to this information.Some took it very seriously,blaming schools,teachers and the educational system.Some argued about the authenticity of the survey.
However,what can all this sound and fury bring us?Instead of arguing and complaining,let’s have a look at the real situation our children are in.Can we make a difference?
As we all know,education is a life long process.Many people take it for granted that teachers and schools are responsible for it,however,we forget the importance of home.Besides schooling,education includes home breeding and the home learning environment.Parents are the first teachers of children.Parental examples are no less important than those of school teachers.Home environment is of great significance to children’s development.However,many parents neglect the importance of after-class time,the home environment and parental example.
Parents,knowing this,can work with their children at home,to build upon what the kids have learned at school.This can be a fun and enriching experience for both parents and children....
